چکیده

We investigate how boundaries in knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination influence UK and German manufacturing firms’ innovation activity. Issues of knowledge control related to plant ownership are generally found to be unimportant for innovation, but knowledge sharing between plants affects innovation in UK plants with no in-house R&D capability. More important is that knowledge co-ordination boundaries, related to functional demarcation in the innovation process, are more prevalent than either knowledge control boundaries or those related to knowledge sharing. Cross-functional teams, which may overcome the boundaries to knowledge co-ordination arising from functional demarcation, are associated with more successful product change and shorter product lifetimes in both the UK and Germany. These relationships, and differences in the incidence of cross-functional teams, provide a partial explanation for differences in innovation performance between UK and German plants.

Outsourcing in the Innovation Process: Locational and Strategic Determinants

There is now substantial evidence that locational and agglomeration influences can have a significant positive effect on innovation performance. Networking and boundary-spanning activities are also increasingly recognised as important contributors to innovation success. This paper attempts to discover whether these factors are linked: in particular, is there any link between plant location, agg...

THE ORGANISATION OF INNOVATION: Collaboration, Co-operation and Multinational Groups in UK and German Manufacturing

Marked differences exist between the institutional and social context for innovation in the UK and Germany. The question addressed here is how these different contexts impact on the objectives and organisation of innovation in UK and German manufacturing. In particular, we examine the extent to which UK and German plants engage in inter-plant collaboration and co-operation and multifunctional w...

Enabling Innovation: Knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination boundaries in UK and German manufacturing

We investigate how boundaries in knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination influence UK and German manufacturing firms’ innovation intensity (an indicator of the volume of product change) and product life (an indicator of the pace of generational change). In general UK plants more commonly face knowledge control boundaries related to plant ownership or control, while German plants more commo...

Innovation and Export Performance: Evidence from Uk and German Manufacturing Plants

Using comparable plant-level surveys we demonstrate significant differences between the determinants of export performance among UK and German manufacturing plants. Innovation, however, measured has a strong and systematic effect on the probability and propensity to export in both countries. The scale of plants' innovation activity is positively related to export propensity in both countries. I...
